old lightweight steel racing bikes make great training bikes/ winter / chaingang hacks -
here's a couple reasonably priced ones quite nearby - this first one actually has regular 700c wheels and maybe a 22 or 23 inch frame.

Chris is quite right to point out bargains that can be found often for classic road bikes that will serve as excellent hacks. The only down side is that they often need new tyres or cables and can end up costing a bit more than you intended to spend.
ReplyDeleteAn alternative is to buy a cheap road bike and run it through the winter and then sell it on in the spring. Currently you could pick up a Carrear in Halfords for £289. Ok its only 16 speed bottom of the range Shimano and weights 10.5 kgs but so what. That is all you really need. In theory you could keep a new and servce free hack on the road for little more than a £100 to £150 after selling it on and buying another cheapo next year.
