Early Bird 16 June - H&StL CC Welcolmes Michael Hitchings

Another good turnout for todays’ full length early bird. This was one of Chris Parker’s excellent routes (saved to my gps). It contained many twists and turns so how Chris remembers it all is beyond me. Good to see both Simon G and Conrad out on an early bird, they were definitely the strongest two riders today. Derek was feeling too tired to complete the whole ride, having had a hard swim the night before and Duncan was struggling a little having had a hard game of squash the night before. Paul B is back in serious training and apart from when he started running out of fuel rode very well throughout the route. Most of us stopped for a bacon buttie at Chilley Farm, just as we were leaving Chris P pulled up with new rider Michael Hitchings.

Distance 50 miles

Av speed 16.2 mph

Ascent 963 metres

Chris writes: “Michael Hitchings joined Chris Parker for a steady bacon butty run. Always a great way for someone to have a first ride with the club. Michael has only just bought a road bike having had a mountain bike for several years. Michael and his wife have the Little Mill Bakery in St Leonards just opposite the site of the former Buchanan hospital on London Road. Chris read about the multiple award winning bakery last year but thought it was in Bohemia Road and had not found it so will be visiting before long to buy some of the speciality breads. As a baker Michael works nights but that worked well for Alf Engers in the 1970s when he became the first rider to break 50 minutes for 25 miles. See www.LittleMillBakery.co.uk
