Hastings-Rye-Hastings TT 20 June
Another great turn out last might, 16 riders last night for the second Hastings Rye Hastings Classic.
15 of the 16 had ridden the previous week, 5 were a fraction slower, 5 less than a minute quicker and 5 more than a minute quicker.
The two juniors were the biggest improvers: Joe Jenner by 3.47 and Joe Kingsman by 4.41. What makes Joe K's improvement even more impressive is that he has only got clipless pedals this week and is still getting used to them plus on the return leg coming up Winchelsea Hill he unshipped his chain and could not get his feet out in time ……. It happens to us all when going up hill, not sure if Joe might have gone on to the small ring earlier since that is often the best thing to do unless you are very confident of your set up. Joe K then had to run up the hill a bit to get an easier start to resume his ride.
JoeJ and hopefully Joe K will be riding the GHS South East heats to se if they can qualify for the National Under 17 final in September near Newbury. There is a senior event straight after in the afternoon on the Fowlmead Circuit (Google it to read all about it), a special cycling etc facility. I am going over to see what it is like, so why not get some more club entries (send in this weekend) and may be make a day of it on a trip to the other side of Dover?
Chris Watson was the third biggest improver from last week to win the Hastings event with Malcolm Daly coming in second after puncturing in the last three miles and having to back off a bit.
Fastest ride of the evening, only just, as by Eastbourne's Peter Moon. Peter used the event (coach Dan Henchy also instructed him to go for extra miles afterwards) in the build up to the National 24 Hour Championships in a few weeks. Last year Peter fell just 4 miles short of Rover's club record of 447 miles. The record was set in 1982 by Charles Robson who sadly passed away last week, but at least he knew his record had not been broken. Charles planned the course for the National 24 hour in East Sussex last year and had still been working on the possible course for the 24 Hour in 2013 or 2014 in East Sussex despite ill health. His funeral is next week and will no doubt see a massive turn out from the cycling world.
Malcolm now tops the points table with 66 points from 6 rides to Ivan's 63 from 6 rides. Remember it is only the best ten placings that count so turn up every week to maximise your points in the table, particularly if the weather is bad and the numbers drop to give an opportunity for more points!
Lee Holdaway on his return to England from a winter and spring training camp rode the SDW 25 last Sunday and is thinking of riding the SCCU 100 in his continued preparations for the Swedish Iron Man on 19 August, which clashes with the ESCA 100. Lee is also planning to do at least one 50 so will join Tim Carpenter as a Club Best All Rounder qualifier - the average of your speeds for the best 25, 50 and 100 miles.
